Walk through any piazza in Italy and you can feel it: tradition. It lives in the architecture, the espresso rituals, the Sunday family dinners—and, unmistakably, in the jewelry. Now imagine bottling that essence and delivering it straight to the hearts of American families. That’s the mission of The Italian Jewelry Company, founded by designer and entrepreneur Jennifer Derrig.

This isn’t just a business. It’s a love letter to her Italian heritage.

A Tale of Two Heritages: From Irish Roots to Italian Gold

Jennifer Derrig is no stranger to cultural storytelling. In 2006, she founded The Irish Jewelry Company to celebrate her father’s Irish roots and those of her husband. But in 2020, she turned her heart toward her Italian heritage, creating The Italian Jewelry Company, a brand that honors generations of Italian artistry, symbolism, and deeply rooted family values.

"I always remembered my grandmother wearing a gold number 13 charm necklace from Italy for good luck," Jennifer recalls. "It was small, but powerful. It stayed with me." It looked similar to our Tredici Number 13 Gold Necklace

Crafting Meaning Through Design

Jennifer is more than a founder; she’s a trained classical jewelry designer who studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology under luminaries like Sandra Boucher of the famous  Marcel Boucher jewelry and Marie Canale. While Boucher emphasized storytelling through design, Canale instilled the importance of understanding materials, costs, and quality.

That duality is central to The Italian Jewelry Company: it’s about emotional resonance and exceptional craftsmanship. Every piece is selected or created with a story in mind, reflecting authentic Italian symbols, values, or traditions.

Why Italian Jewelry Matters

Let’s be clear: not all gold shines the same. Italian jewelry stands apart for its superior craftsmanship, regional diversity, and luxurious detail. It’s born from centuries of skill in places like Arezzo, where goldsmithing is an art form; from the shores of Sicily, where red coral is harvested; from Venice, where Murano glass glows with history.

The Italian Jewelry Company imports directly from Italy, not mass-produced knock-offs, but artisan-created pieces that honor the old ways.

The Cornicello: A Case Study in Emotional Power

The most viral story on the company blog? The Meaning and Power of the Cornicello: The Italian Horn Necklace.

This iconic symbol of protection, prosperity, and defiance against the "malocchio" (evil eye) resonates with thousands of Italian Americans. The company’s line of Italian horn necklaces continues to be a customer favorite. Some gift it for protection, others for luck, and many simply because it feels like home.

From Tariffs to Triumph

Launching a new jewelry brand during a global pandemic? Hard enough. Add in rising tariffs after Italy’s "Liberation Day" and a volatile euro-to-dollar exchange, and you’ve got a real challenge.

"Sourcing became a nightmare," Jennifer admits. "We pride ourselves on importing real jewelry made in Italy, but suddenly the costs were skyrocketing. We’re still navigating it."

Yet despite the challenges, the company pushes forward. Plans are already underway to work directly with Italian manufacturers on exclusive, bespoke collections, much like what was done for The Irish Jewelry Company.

Blending Old-World Faith with New-World Style

The Italian Jewelry Company isn’t only for Italian Americans. The goal is to make this style accessible to anyone who appreciates quality, symbolism, and emotional connection.

Take the La Famiglia collection, for example. It celebrates the importance of family in Italian culture—a universal value that transcends borders. Or the Say It In Italian collection, which turns beautiful Italian phrases into wearable poetry.

What Makes The Italian Jewelry Company Different?

  • Authenticity: Everything is inspired by real Italian traditions or made in Italy.

  • Affordability: Luxury doesn’t have to be unattainable.

  • Emotion: Every piece tells a story of faith, superstition, love, or protection.

That emotional resonance is what truly sets the brand apart. Whether it’s a Nonna necklace for Mother’s Day, a Cornicello for protection, or a Rosary Bead bracelet from Italy, each item isn’t just worn—it’s felt.

Looking Ahead: What's Next?

While still a young brand, The Italian Jewelry Company is rapidly building momentum. The goal? To become the go-to destination for Italian Americans seeking jewelry that reflects their heritage, and for everyone else seeking beauty that feels meaningful.

As Jennifer puts it, "We want you to feel like family when you wear our jewelry. Because in Italian culture, family is everything."
